The Berkshire village of Winkfield lies in the Bracknell area of the county in a parish which also contains small hamlets like Winkfield Row, Winkfield Street and Swinley. Despite being small, the village held its own race meeting on Monday 9th November 1839 on a 3 mile course across Winkfield countryside. The course started at Lower Farmhouse owned by Mr Leader, and progressed to the Follyjohn Park Estate. The main Grand Steeplechase Cup, sponsored by Captain Martyn, attracted an entry of 15 of which 8 started. The main race was won by The Cottager owned by Lord Drumlanrig, and a later Sweepstake was also won by Lord Drumlanrig’s choice from Mr Lawley and Mr Tollemache. |
